Salt Reduction Success – Schär Cornflakes

Following 2 years of reformulation and sensory evaluation, Schar have successfully reduced the salt content of their most popular gluten-free breakfast cereal by an impressive 50%.

Removal of 163kg of salt from gluten-free diets

For a typical bowl of cornflakes, this change might seem small, but from a population perspective - it is certainly impactful. In 2025, over 700,000 portion packs of Schär Cornflakes were sold into UK food service, mostly to meet the breakfast requirements of coeliac holidaymakers and business travellers staying in UK hotels. Based on these sales, the recent salt reduction represents the removal of 163kg of salt from gluten-free diets.

From a global perspective, the achievement is even more meaningful. Based on global retail and Food Service sales of Schar Cornflakes in 2025, Schar have removed an impressive 3.6 tonnes of salt from gluten-free diets, thereby living true to their mission of improving the lives of people with special nutritional needs.

From a regulatory and compliance perspective, there is further good news

Schär cornflakes now contain 0.9g salt/ 100g. This meets the 2024 Public Health England Salt Reduction Targets and the Government Buying Standards (relating to salt) for breakfast cereals, making this product an appealing option for schools, hospitals and other public sector settings.
