The European Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (ESPGHAN) has published new criteria for the diagnosis of coeliac condition. The draft was presented in June 2010 at ESPGHAN's 43rd annual meeting in Istanbul. The study has been freely available online since January 2012. Under the new guidelines, a small intestine biopsy is no longer considered the gold standard test and serological tests now play a much more significant role. The diagnosis distinguishes between two patient groups: symptomatic patients and asymptomatic patients with an increased risk of coeliac condition. ESPGHAN proposes different diagnostic algorithms for each of the two groups.
